Designated Driver (Part 2)

I saw the restroom facilities immediately when I came to the park, but I drove as far back as possible, to the remotest section, the furthest from the sight of a patrolling cop. The damp night air chilled us as we stepped outside for a stretch. I agreed to let Rick sleep outside in my sleeping bag, because I did not want to do that myself. Moisture from the grass soaked our shoes, but Rick persisted in his plans. I helped him find the driest, or least wet, section in the grass. Then he lay down... Sign in to see full entry.

Designated Driver (Part 1)

Who's driving besides me? That's what I should have asked. What I did ask myself was what I needed for an overnight trip over Washington's Cascades. Toothpaste and a brush, a shaving kit, and a change of clothes, I thought. I better throw in a sleeping bag also. Calvin asked a favor of me, if I could help his mother move her belongings out of a Wenatchee storage back to Bellingham. This Friday morning I accepted his request without giving the matter much thought. But maybe I should have. After... Sign in to see full entry.

The Picture I Paint (c)

If I could paint a picture, I would paint a landscape I saw several winters ago coming home for Christmas vacation across a South Dakota contour near Chamberlain, a town on the Missouri river. The painting is in my mind even now. My eyes retake the journey--left to right, East to West. An umbra issues from the fringes of the gilded frame to the left side of the canvas. An obscure sky looms directly above a dwelling shaded beneath trees. A dim porch light illumines the house, a replicated log... Sign in to see full entry.

The Face of the Son

The image of the son loomed in Justus Halvorson's mind. The boy, Jimmy, in a white gown, beamed with a smile in his confirmation picture. Buoyant, blond hair dedecked the boy. A dimple dotted the chin. The blue eyes sparkled above the aquiline nose. The face was broad, soft and yet solid. Why did Grace have to drag the photograph out from storage? He was even bothered just seeing it from across the room. The fatal baling accident took Jimmy's life three years ago, but to Justus it still felt... Sign in to see full entry.

Stunned Laughter

The man in the moon was laughing in the night sky. A wiggly, elongated cloud streaked across its lower part, and the lunar light shone down upon three young ladies hailing a taxi. Annette, the huskiest and clear leader of the trio, had insisted the other two go on their excursion. Julie, with downcast eyes, stepped forward first into the cab. Staci, compact and blond, followed but with a weak complaint, "I don't know about this, Annette. It's scary out here." "Just get inside." She looked... Sign in to see full entry.

Cal Linder's, Inc.

Chill permeated the air and made Scott McFarland shudder from head to foot.It was not the cold season; nonetheless, McFarland felt a cold coming. He downed a medicinal cup of Cal Linder's Cold-Flu Formula and went to bed. The full effect did not take long.McFarland was fast gone into the world of sleep. He smelled the must of pumpkin, looked up, and saw a Jack o' lantern held in hand by a tall man on a black stallion. He wore knee length boots, a dark frock... and was without ahead. A familiar...
