Why is fuel economy at a plateau?

I just took a look at a graph of the fuel economy standards for the last 30 years. It seems that a lot of its been holding steady at around 20mpg. What's even more shocking is the fact that it never went beyond 22mpg back in 1987! I can remember the magazine ads of the eighties that circled fuel... Sign in to see full entry.
