I hate cloth handkerchiefs CCT. Turned out the offending item was beyond rescue and has gone into the bin!

No easy answer to this, I do wonder how efficient washing clothes really is if
contaminated articles are all put in together with normal wear. I suppose socks etc
are better washed separately. I don't think hankerchies are very hygenic, better to
use paper tissues. It has been a couple of tough years. .
