What a mess. My nursing degree was for general nursing and for psych. While I was working in hematology I was the only RN who they sent to the Hospital section for psych patients. Even though mostly I managed very well there were a few really funny experiences; and a couple that had me in tears while I took the blood samples.

Re: FormerStudentIntern

I agree. The part of this story I just posted on Vella this morning (I'm about ten episodes ahead there of where I am here) begins to briefly talk about the number of psychiatrists I was sent to by the state of Michigan. The problem was, I also had a degree (a BS, not a Ph.D., but still...) and I began to play games with them. I didn't get better until I saw a psychologist.

As I have said about MD vs DO physicians, if you want to take pills, see the MD. If you want to get better, see a DO. I was enrolled in a DO medical school until I decided to become a paramedic. I learned the difference in the philosophy between the two and decided the DO was the better way to go.

It's the same with psychiatrists vs psychologists. If you like going to the doctor and taking pills, you see one. If you want to get better, you see the other. The approach between the at least ten psychiatrists I saw was uniformly the same, but the approach of the psychologist was vastly different and he fixed me in a matter of a few months vs the years I wasted seeing the others.

MY OPINION. Your mileage may vary.

Mental illness is a serious thing, one in which I'm glad is being discussed nowadays.
