His head is 180 backward. This species of owls won't be in the open like this one is most of the time. I'm not sure if I 'surprised' him or if he just doesn't give a flying hoot about me being there. We (the dogs and I) were frequent visitors to that area, and I suspect they got used to us. This bird has to be an adult as it was easy two feet in height. They are an apex predator, with their only worry being eagles and the larger hawks. The rabbit population in this area was high, and I found multiple sites where one had been hit by an owl like this one or an eagle.
