As I wrote, their relationship horrified me, but I came to see that was their normal. My mother was a 'screamer.' She couldn't just ask you to do something; she had to scream her 'orders.' I never have and will never scream at my wife and or children, but their screamng that was odd and hurtful for me was their 'perfectly acceptable.' It went on during the twenty-five or so years we were friends, and I never got used to it. 

You are quite correct. The one thing that 'Dave' did tell me was that the silence was deafening. Any house that goes from constant 'noise' to total silence has to be a shock.

I suppose the environment had changed. Do you think Dave may have been

stimulated by the excessive wordplay that was usually tolerated between himself and

his wife? One can imagine the oppressive silence.
