My schools taught both. Social Studies went with Geography. They both were taught in elementary school and in high school - one semester of each was a requirement in HS, I think. Civics was also a requirement and if one did not pass the test on the Constitution, one couldn't gradulate. Driver Ed was also a requirement for graduation from HS.

Yes, exactly.
I had social studies in high school. Looking back, it was one of my favorite classes.

I was in school when they still taught civics, the constitution, and
how to plan a family budget, including how to balance a checkbook. This all seems like vital info and I know of no graduating seniors who could not make good use of this if they had the will to do so.
