They don't have to ask if you're happy - you'll show it.
On the other hand, if you're not happy and they ask about it, is it better to say yes anyway and not burden them with your unhappiness?

Exactly. People tend to ignore the important things and weigh in on the monetary crap. He had it all except for true happiness.
