They weren't much better where I grew up in the late 40's and 50's but somehow we survived.

The same here. Mom applied that red stuff that stung, threw on a bandage, and I was told to shake it off.

Mom patched us up more often than she'd have liked. Kids weren't so
hovered over when I was younger, and sometimes we leapt before we looked.
