My parents paid for mine because they placed grades above all else, plus, I worked for them.

I suppose it depends how the money situation pans out. If the teenager earns a good
wage well no harm in paying.

I'm sorry to hear that. It must have been shocking. If the teen is capable of earning money and able some responsibility is good. On the other hand, I worked at a little job for a time in the summer and paid my dad for a car, which was his old one, but he "sold" it to me cheap, and he paid the insurance back when I was a teen.
