My Mum always put a few sixpences in the Christmas puddings it was always a bit exciting. Of course hygiene was not a big thing in those days. Especially if one had grown up in WW1.

I am not a fan of inanimate objects being placed in cakes, babies, coins, or otherwise. I will make an exception for a fork though.
