I can believe it.  Back in the days before antibiotics people did strange things to stay well, or get well, and many died quickly.

A woman told me that when they were children her mother spread goose grease on their backs and chests put a vest on and it was not removed until spring. It takes some believing but she was adamant.

I don't suppose the Grandmother could write. The Grandfather had a large barn, he always call five shillings a Dollar so maybe they were once.

Sad times then when the little ones got ill. Herbs werecall they had for most part. if only it had been different.

That's the way they did things back then.  My Grandma Jelinek was a believer in onion poltices for croup, congetion, pneumonia and so she grew tons of onions in her garden and stashed them in the cellar.
