Either he was really pissed off about something or just incredibly stupid to think he could actually get away with it.

Why did it appear that none of the officers spoke to the detainee during that entire episode?

Nobody knows the mind of another human, this is true, but...
He had to see that the guy was in distress. He was already handcuffed, so why the overkill? He was even warned by one of the three officers that he should stop. At what point do you realize that you just crossed the boundary to no return?
