It must be a deterrent, I expect easier hidden places are more acceptable

I have 4 Cameras on my house and 6 smaller "dear hunting cameras" on trees around my barn. I've gotten license plates of trucks trying to clean my tools out.

Absolutely, yes. When people are mindful that they are being watched and possibly caught doing dirty deeds, those who have a conscience will listen to their inner voice telling them, "don't do it."

I believe they have a role in all three...I do not believe just anyone should have access to them, though. It's up to the owner.
