I think the appeal of that character was his ability to adapt and
win out against the odds. We'd all like to be capable of solving problems and getting ourselves out of a pickle if necessary. I didn't find him believable - always able to use chewing gum and a bobby pin to overcome overwhelming obstacles.
Judging by the public's use of salt water to jam up your change machines, there were just as many -- let me see, what's the word I'm thinking of? -- people who will take any dumb suggestion and try it -- then as now. Guess it's not all the fault of social media.
