Eliot wrote this in a mental asylum on Boston after he and the entire world was disillusioned, hopeless, in the midst of death and destruction and waste all around. For this disjointed poem he received the Nobel prize in 1948. As a mental case he was indeed ‘a waste’ himself but what an achievement!

I had read this post and was unable to comment because it was so late here and it is a complex topic. With Eliot’s apparent genius cane much conflict, I feel. He was the “wasteland“ to himself, perhaps, as was his disillusionment - though I hate to use that word, with life as he observed it. I think he found his grail‘s substance and meaning through his study of Hindu teachings.
