I believe that consumerism is in play. People like to spend their money these days at trendy spots. Then when the new mall comes, people abandon it for the newest, brightest place.

In our area in Louisville, malls are quickly going away.  They've become too much of a place where punks and gangs hang out for hours.  The trend in Louisville is Shopping Centers with the store separated over several acres.  The punks are too lazy to walk from store to store...their "hangouts" no longer exist. The two largest malls in Louisville are almost completely empty....

None. Often there are snooty workers and snobby shoppers. I’m talking stores like those on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills. Not that I shopped there - ever. A regular nice mall can be fun though.
