I mean, even Mark Twain had editors - I read someplace that his wife made him delete some salacious or profane words...

I agree with you that plural/singular pronouns should be in agreement. Maybe it’s just me, but I enjoy reading works in which that is so. I hope Charlie finds a good agent. That‘s almost an oxymoron to some. [I’m joking.]
