It's good they were able to build. I think it's not so much that you are not as optimistic as before but that caution comes into a clearer focus with age.

The area around "Beautiful Downtown Mundane" was coal mining
territory during the settlement days, 100 years or so ago - so much of the land where new projects are going up are undermined. It's not uncommon for contractors to have to dig very deeply to get to bedrock. I'm glad it worked out for you all.

I found when I was working that almost always when I came back from a holiday or a break it was to some sort of bad news. I know just how miserable that Dad would have felt.
