Your dad was probably very aware that he would more or less get along with the SIL's, but was willing to make the sacrifice to keep his girls close.

Doing the move made a lot of sense with the circumstances at the time...In America, we seem to have a lot of people who move far distances for a variety of distance.

This is so interesting. Your family was doing the equivalent of

homesteading in Australia, taming various stretches of land, even as my mom's family and all kinds of kith and kin were settling homesteads in the USA. Hard to imagine all that open land now that this old world has become crowded.

How interesting this is to read! And what a surprise about the dynamics of the family. But why did your dad go off to a different part of the country to look for land? And not in the area where he had intended to look? A shame that the big house would go to your sis with no discussions. It sounds like it had been a very pleasant lifestyle up till then. Please continue, dear Kabu.
