I walked to public school and took the subway to high school until barding school. But I started watching cars when I was about six, and learned about makes and models and top speed and such. When I was thirteen I also began watching girls, and to this day I still watch both...

I know exactly what you mean.  When my husband and I bought our big old house in 1960, it was a nice quiet shady street with privacy.  In 1962, the Catholic Diocese bought all the houses across the street from us, tore down the houses and built a school.  They made the street oneway but that didn't even help.  Morning and afternoon the street was totally jampacked and we couldn't even get out of our driveway.

Years since we all walked to school in little groups. I remember one such group shuffling along we always called it the tribe of Israel. Later mothers were seen carrying the young un on the back of a bicycle. The kids who were a bit older and lived in the villages were allotted school bicycles. The old headmistress of the junior school was a real heavyweight and feared terribly She, used to mount her bicycle and ride up the street sticking her right arm out as she reached the right turn one or two brave little souls would stick their arms out to copy her. They were very brave indeed.
