Re: Krisles,

...we don't have individuals able to just take advantage of resources as they choose - there are regulations and taxes and laws and agencies out the kazoo!

And then there are the Koch Brothers and the Waltons and the inumerable corporations who get their main office mail in Ireland...   I stand by what I wrote.

Ciel

Interesting and heartfelt post, Ciel.  My first thought after reading was of a film I hadn't thought about in a long time that had a profound impact on me at a very young age.  I was late elementary/jr.high or so, and the film was quite old already...the original Frank Capra version of James Hilton's classic novel, Lost Horizon.  I saw the film several times over the next few years, and read the novel.  I remember having several different streams of philosophical thoughts that stemmed from it.....but, mainly - oh, to live in Shangri-La...wouldn't it be wonderful!

The definition of Socialism has not changed  This concept of Democratic Socialism is a relatively new thing...actually, it's quite new in the scheme of public knowledge; so no one should feel all that guilty for not knowing that much about it.  I did go look it up as soon as Bernie started talking about it, though.  I looked for a group that says they believe in the philosophy, has members, etc., so I went here: http://www.dsausa.org/what_is_democratic_socialism

I found my mouth dropping open at some points and my stomach churning with fear at others, because I believe our young people are so terrifyingly clueless.  And yet they are so passionate, like the 60's.  The Utopia/Shangri-La would be wonderful - if money fell from the skies....and if human nature weren't what is is.

The short little descriptions you gave were very pat but not really filled out.......we do not have Capitalism as you paint because we don't have individuals able to just take advantage of resources as they choose - there are regulations and taxes and laws and agencies out the kazoo!  And people are not run roughshod over, there are so many welfare programs it is laughable and we have created a dependency sickness........the problems are mismanagement and waste, not lack.  And you talk of Democratic Socialism as though it actually existed - it has never been a reality and it has to exist as a world-wide effort to even have a chance.

Read the full story from out of their own mouths.  I'm not saying change doesn't need to come, Ciel....it does, it does, it does.  But, someone has to pay for it.....someone has to get out of bed in the morning and go do the work, create the jobs, take the risk....that has been proven.  The idea that all these people who are not pulling their share now are suddenly going to have a great awakening with a new "Democratic Socialism"...something that has never, ever been proven to function....well, if you know the route to Shangri-La, please save me a seat!

I am thankful for your entry. So many things nowadays in society are being defined by buzzwords.

Re: Re: CielT,

We are a couple of months behind you no sign of green buds only the grass is growing but morning frosts might check that we get those until nearly June usually.

Well reasonable to you is calamity to most.

Great definition post.  I hope a lot of people will read it and think on what has been said.  It is not good enough to be staunch at one or the other without really understanding what either, or both, are really all about.

Re: CCT,

It's easy to follow, to take no responsibility for making decisions, to let someone else break the path. It can be done without thinking or worrying about anything except one's own comforts and needs met. The thing is, we are not instinctual animals, we have choice. It's just easier to believe that we don't.

I don't understand why the world doesn't see how reasonable I am.

How is your countryside this season?  It is so springlike here, today, though it will likely snow soon, that I am imagining it the same there, all green fields and flowering hedges...

Re: Sweet Kabu,

I don't think we can wait for someone to do that--just have to reason ourselves past our auto-pilots. I hate for words and names to be ruined, to lose their innocence in a manner of speaking, like Isis, most recently. And 'trump' will never be the same...

Ciel I think most folk are followers, not all but the basic instinct is to do as one's parent's do or did. Usually no one cares until it affects them personally or they believe it will. It is hard work being a brown chicken amongst a pen of speckled one's. Good Blog though if everyone thought like you, well the world would be different.

Dear Ciel

It is a very good Post. Maybe we need to call some old horses by new names so that we who are scared of a word can understand. Words like revolution and socialism and fascist.
