You had some good ideas!
Knowing what's age-appropriate is very helpful medically, as well as emotionally. If a child is supposed to know how to walk by age sixteen months, for example, but isn't, you know to bug the pediatrician or other health-care providers about this. And you know when to teach a child that his or her behavior is inappropriate; teaching a newborn not to cry, for example, is unrealistic, but teaching a five-year-old that you find his whining annoying is OK in my opinion. The trick is in how it's done. And that is also the difficulty; I think we all go "over the top" on occasion.

I agree that raising children is very hard work. My 5 year old knows how to push my buttons, probably more than anybody else in the world! I try to not react emotionally, but sometimes it is not easy. I believe that reading about the stages of development so that I know what is age appropriate behavior and what is not, as well as talking to other moms about the issues they face, has helped me be a better mom. Moms need a support system.
