i have no tatoos, but my youngest son has two, his ex wife has one, and now their daughter tells me for her 18th birthday, mom is taking her to get a small tatoo, ????? for her 16th birthday mon took her for a belly button pierce.  that upset me more than a tatoo.

I myself am a male who does not have any tatoos. I have nothing against tatoos, but they are not for me. One is that I hate getting shots and blood taken, so unless something is beneficial to my health, no way. Secondly, there is really no message of any sort I would want on my body.

I have noticed tatoos on a lot of people, both men and women, over the last decade.

One time, I was watching an interview with professional Lanny Poffo. He said he asked his daughter why she had gotten a tatoo.

"I wanted to be different," she said.

"Like everyone else?" he observed.

I hate tattoos so much and believe that our body isn't a given to draw picture on it.

My girls have tattoos...

The elder, quite a small one on an upper arm, the younger has a lion climbing over most of her thigh.

I suspect most of the antipathy many of us older folk feel about it comes from growing up in an era when only sailors, bikers and convicts wore them. But today it is something else, and I have seen some that are delicate and lovely: a gal with what appeared to be a single strand of tiny beads part way around her neck that complemented a few strands of actual beads... A pattern done with white ink that is subtle and delicate.

For anyone who changes their mind or temporarily needs blankness, the best concealer I know of (from my days of selling theatrical makeup) is a line from Ben Nye that is no more expensive and far more effective than anything available in a regular cosmetics counter.

Re: Justi

Thank you for your thoughts.  I was raised to never get tattoos, so it has never occurred to me to do so for myself.  As far as I know, none of my sisters ever did either.  It seems to be the younger generations of women interested in them for the most part in our family.

TAPS

I personally don't want anything that controls me more than I control it attached to my body. I have never seen an attractive tatt and I feel it is the business of the one getting it; however, I don't think I could ever find them attractive or fashionable. This is more about angst today in my thinking than about pretty or cute. It is I can, I will and if you don't like it kiss off. It is a sign of arrogance to some degree to me.

The unicorn can run faster downhill as he/she ages.

You are not old fashioned. I feel the same way as you do about tattoos. I'm quite

conservative in some ways.

No I really don't like the idea of ink under my skin. I only have one weeny tat. It was where a boy stuck his pen in my wrist at school. I ought to put a curse on him.

There's kind of a tribal connection in tatts - the 20-somethings who

go for the skulls and roses, etc., instantly have a social link with others bearing the same brand. I don't have any because I hate pain and fear the possibility of Hepatitis. On the other hand, I don't want to be thought a fuddy-duddy because I think they look bad.

I don't like them. Removing them is pretty difficult and I expect still leaves scars. Actually I can't stand them cos as you say one on a male arm can be quite attractive, but it becomes like an addiction.

I had a good chat with my granddaughter last Nov. and suggested that the pretend ones could be fun for a party but a permanent one you are stuck with. She never wears the same clothes two days in a row...I said to her imagine having to wear a tattoo all your life. Miki really didn't like that Idea. I do hope she keeps her beautiful little body free. I would never judge anyone by their tattoos but one older lady to another...yes I don't care for them.

Re: Naut

Son's tattoos that he got during Navy years in the 1980's are definitely faded and not clear as they once were.  But they are still important to him in remembering Navy days and friends.  He always wears tank tops in warmer weather to show off his shoulder ones.

TAPS

(Or maybe I should have speeld it TATS, LOL)..Tattooing is as old as the hills, going back many thousands of years. It's probably part of a general human tendency to adorn the body...But it's also clearly a 'fashion' thing...

Anyway, I haven't goy any, though I came close on several occasions, especially when I was spending far more time on the water than I do now! But I always had this nagging feeling - what if (I change my mind? Don't like it any longer? Commit a horrific crime and get identified by it?) - what do I do then? So I ended up not getting any...

I think more women get them now simply because they like them and they can, whereas in the past there were certain largely tacit 'taboos against tattoos' for women...

But I do think many people forget to take aging into account - what happens to a beautiful face or flower when the wrinkles appear?
