ohbianca Thanks for commenting and I agree we need social programs

in order for our species to advance beyond the need for them.

I don't think most of the population has outgrown the need for social programs.   So many jobs in this country do not pay a living wage to their employees, twenty percent of this country's population can't afford health insurance (I am among them, so I never go to the doctor), rent is skyrocketing while wages are sinking...

So many Americans live in motels or out of their cars.  Americans with full-time jobs, sometimes two, who still can't make ends meet.  It's incredible...  If more social programs means a 'paternalistic' government, so be it...

You should read 'Nickel and Dimed'.  Every American should.  It is such a wake up call.

I think many a generation will have to suffer through many many many cycles of psychos before we see an inkling of hope in any of  the right places.  Meantime we have us and we know whatsssup....

Very true, my friend. Very, very true. Problem is, we don't WANT truly enlightened leaders. We want sound bites, we want violence, we want the poll-driven. And we don't care if they lie, cheat or steal to get to the office. Just look at the current psycho there.
