They do look magnificent. It is very interesting reading about them.

Well I have two magpies that visit and a jackdaw, it was funny I caught a couple of mice in traps in the greenhouse, SNAP! they don't suffer, I don't like using poison. I threw them outside of the greenhouse meaning to pick them up later, when I came back to look they were gone, so I assume the birds took them. I used to have a magpie as well. Those larger birds quite intelligent in a way quite cautious until they feel it is safe to be in the neighborhood. We also have pigeons wild ones and doves and one little mouse that lives under the bird table and is protected by Arthur.

In reply to your comment ,this does look like dosing  with C.L.O .

I have to smile |Kabu... I have no liking for magpies, whether Australian or English!  My daughter was swooped by magpies when she was about 11, riding her bike back from a friend's house one afternoon, and when I used to walk with a friend in the forest we needed to have sticks with us during the nesting season, just in case.  Over here, they swing on the bird feeder and try to peck out the bits from the 'fatballs' we put out for smaller birds, and it gives us a laugh when they can't hang on.  They are soon back, however, scavenging on the ground for the bits that the little birds drop.  Too clever by half ! smile

There were a lot of magpies in the places I lived as a kid - on the farm

they weren't very welcome, like crows. I think crows are amazing, and if they got away with a bit of grain, it was only right... I don't remember ever being dive-bombed by a magpie - they dress differently in this part of the world I think. But I've been swooped by robins on guard duty.

You sure that little pooch didn't kill that magpie. Kidding, I'm pretty much a bird man

 myself.

Kabu

That was a neat story I did not know anything about them, don't know if we have them here. I have a yard full of all sorts of birds and squirrels since my sweet Buddy cat went away. I feed them and they eat the bugs so we both benefit. They are so pretty.

Kabu

I like magpies! There's even an opera about one - Rossini's La Gazza Ladra - The Thieving Magpie...
