I think the Irish were fairly good at it Pat. Probably used potatoes. worst wine we ever endured was Brussel Sprout wine. The same  brother made a couple of gallons to prove that wine could be made out of most things. After a fortnight and a smell as if four elephants had diarrhea , he admitted defeat and poured it down the outside drain.

I'm generally not a fan of poetry, but your pieces always make me smile!!

I always thought the moonshine thing was a U.S. southern kind of

cultural anomaly - it never occurred to me that it originated in Jolly Old England. Of course the southerners originated there, so it should have been perfectly obvious the habits and small vices would also do... I always thought the home-distilled stuff they call white lightning must simply taste like fire. Interesting to see your description of the flavor and the after-affects of sipping some of it.

Re: ChiffChiff

Saved your self a fortune Bro., Well I guess you would not be around to enjoy it if you had kept on that way. They do say the younger folks  are drinking less, perhaps it is becoming too expensive. I might give up, let me think , cream buns.

Re:

I think it just tastes like a weak wine dipped in parsley. One of the most popular around here was orange, as you remember they came in boxes and the box made a good broody nest or laying box. The oranges were notorious for being half mouldy in the middle I suppose it took a long time to ship them. Some of the oldies would take the mouldy ones and turn it into wine wrappers and all I expect. Stop it we don't spell it moldy I don't like it when they keep omitting the u do u ?

Re Krisles

Lo Krisles      I suppose it gives that extra buzz to the atmosphere, but to sense the excitement one has to refrain from imbibing. I think?

In my life, I have met one person who made his own home brew. It was moonshine. My dad tried some and did not like the taste.

Many an old (and even many a young) Kentucky moonshiner would greet a familiar spirit...

I enjoyed this whole post....the poems were fun....and the musings on our obsessions with spirits were fun.  For whatever reason, we seem to want to raise the floor on which we float...I know I certainly do.

I always wondered what Parsley wine tasted like, but never really wanted to find out. Australian wines only really came into their own in the 60's and are beautiful.Mother used to make Ginger beer with  yeast plant of somesort. It was really good to drink.
