It's difficult to say no to a friend, but usually it's the right thing to do. It avoids problems coming up at a later date, as I am sure they both discovered.

Your dad should have made it understood at least once a year that those months were off limits for vacation planning

You have great insight to people's communication problems. Yes Dad spoilt Josh and Josh behaved like a spoilt child. Both needed someone to point out to them that they were heading for big work trouble.
