It makes me so disgusted that they seem to prey on older people.  My mom and dad would have given anybody the shirt off of their backs if they thought they needed help.

One of the keys to the successes rates of these scams comes in another phrase in this excellent post - having their wits about them.  It was three yrs ago now that an alert Walmart Customer Svc Supervisor kept my mom from wiring $4000 to my son-in-law, even to the point of calling a cop to help convince her it was a scam.  She will still argue that Shad was the one on the phone due to her in and out confused state....and has yet to be dx with dementia as she can focus fine for the tests! It is a sneaky disease.

In spite of the publicity, these scammers seem to be thriving...Maybe it's because older folks are simply not geared much into public debates generally...

Yes one must beware Pat each scam is becoming more insidious.

Emails so friendly one almost feels it is mean not to answer them.

One really has to have ones wits about one , I am glad that you can

remind the more gullible to be on their guard.

My grandma almost got taken in by the "grandparent" scam, apparently that one has international popularity. Luckily, she was chatting with the lady at the bank while preparing the money order - the clerk smelled a rat, and suggested that grandma call my cousin to check in before actually proceeding with the transaction. That women gets a number of Christmas cards from my family every year...

I agree - at least the gun-totin' thief is honest about his intentions!
