You did a fine job with the writing prompt. George is an interesting, realistic character.

A good un as we say in the sticks. You still have the knack if you try. Very warming  indeed. Must not put ideas in to my head though,

Kabu

Now that is what I call both an excellent short story and a great character study!  It also struck a very personal chord for it sounded much like our old lake house...I'm sure the neighbors cringe and it is the last of the "unimproved" but my dad died right after he finished turning an old shack into a vacation retreat 30+ yrs ago and I'm loathe to change his last labor.

Wow! When you get the writing bug, you get it good!

Old George, walking with a limp - my next door neighbor back in Salkum came immediately to mind. And he would have been a great "daddy" to a wiggly pup.  Write on!

A wonderful story for me to read right before I hop into bed for the night.  And you say it was inspired by only one word--love.  Love is a very good word.

And I guess I don't have to tell you how I love this story.

This is lovely, Grandmummy.  I have tears in my eyes, for George and his Grace remind me of my Great-Grandparents, William and Evelyn, who were married exactly eighty years before she died and left him all alone.  So beautiful.
