I looked it up, of course - fascinating stuff! I think urban legends were as prevalent in the 19th century as they are now, if not more so...

C C T thanks for reading....not that I am any expert, but I also find the whole letcher side of the story to be a bit of an urban legend. It's a great legend though.

Well I vaguely remember seeing a sketch of spring heeled Jack . He fitted a couple of springs to his shoes and supposedly could jump a low wall or fence. He may have worn a mask but I would have thought he needed to keep his balance rather than molesting young women. Now I will check on what Taps has looked up.
