Re: Fizabhmanaf,

Sorry for miss-spelling your name in the previous comment--It is 5am and my eyes are half-asleep, and didn't see the error slip in!

Re: Fizab\hmanaf,

Thank you so much for taking the time to respond to my post.

The key point upon which we both agree is that it be a matter of a woman's choice.  The report to which I was responding was about men pressuring women into a particular choice, denigrating and making them feel bad about themselves for not living to the standard men required.

Nuns of certain orders and women of certain Christian sects also cover themselves as much as wearers of the hijab, short of covering the face. For all those required to 'dress modestly' the onus is placed on women to manage the essential 'beastly' nature of men. It insults men as much as women, I think, as well as relieving men of the responsibility to keep their own clothes on.

Hijab

As a person who practices wearing the hijab, I can only say that I wear the hijab simply because that is what that has been decreed upon me as a believer of my faith. Whatever excuses others may have given, more often than not we who wear the hijab are happy obeying this decree from God. God's law is not like the legislations of a country; no one gets punished here on earth who does not wish to comply. So there is that temporary reprieve and one is free to choose. I just feel that whilst many champion a woman's rights to dress as she pleases, so does a woman who chooses to wear the hijab be respected of that right too. History has shown many women of the past, regardless of race and faiths, have practiced covering their head and bosom; in other words, the hijab.

Ciel

I had read that, thought I might write a post on it, but then didn't. What we have here are tribal, 7th century Arab notions of 'ownership', maintained because they were allegedly endorsed and hence 'sanctified' by God...

You are right about how dysfuctional it is.

Re: CCT,

You are right, in every culture we seem to care more about what people wear  on the outside than who they are on the inside.  In fact, there isn't much distinction made at all: Clothes make the man! Fashion defines the woman!

Well honestly I though you were talking about yourself Ciel. Sadly it seems many women are treated as poorly even if they wear designer clothers or Jersies and Jeans/

You really are a very special person ...we are on the same wave length...for me the Hijab is a symptom of male domination, reppresion and brutality and men I know in My life that I love do not behave as such.

I could see all that in your poem, though I, of course, didn't know where the thoughts were coming from.  You express your thoughts very well.
