Yes they were into it quite a lot I remember an article where an ex-prisoner of the Japanese was when in captivity introduced to the Commandant's haiku when it was discovered that he wrote poetry.

Rick Clark, instructor at SCCC, emailed me he won a Haiku competition
in a Japanese publication. Wowed me! He's a nice guy, serious poet. He and his wife do yoga and other peace oriented workshops... I miss Seattle sometimes. Love your post today, seeing the cat lifting...
