I have never liked chat for myself.  It moves along far too fast for me.  But, I must say that I have never just gone off and left someone hanging like that.  What I have done is inform those who like chatting that I am not interested in communicating that way and would much rather have an email or a phone call.

I still believe in the old-fashioned way I start with hello and finish with goodbye.

Never use it Ciel I don't like the feeling of anonymity, although it is sometimes the same with phone calls I like to eyeball or write a letter.

It is amazing what technology enables us to do.

Just for fun, I actually joined a chat room not too long after getting my first computer, and although it was somewhat interesting and I met some nice people, it quickly lost its luster for me. Like you wrote, the whole concept goes against everything we've ever been taught on how to manage and navigate through a thoughtful, intelligent, meaningful conversation with another human being. "Chats" have no real substance to them, and I'm glad I jumped ship on it sooner than later . . .

I don't use chat but I do text when I am in Australia...I think it is rude not to say Bye or something.
