Thanks, Kabu. As long as there's still life . . .

Re:

Yeah, adnohr, that 'spare the rod' scenario may be one of the key factors, but of course you're opening up a whole other can of worms there! And personally, I see the problem getting worse before it gets better. Thanks for the congrats. Now I won't feel so bad if my Rangers do lose in L.A. on Friday. At least they didn't get swept! I'm still very proud they even got this far. And hey, ya never know! They could make history . . .

Re:

That's true, Annicita, and I do remember those particular events. Yes, the Internet didn't exist back then, but I can only imagine what those events may have turned into had the Internet existed at that time. People have been easily influenced by others over the years. The interent is just making it easier . . .

Re: Re: Re:

It is strange, Kabu, that the kids of today sometimes seem so hell-bent on imitating so many things they see and hear, whether they are dangerous or not. We knew back then the difference between reality and fiction, and the difference between right & wrong! I wish I could put a finger on what went wrong, and when . . .

I guess we're back to the 'spare the rod, spoil the child' thing. Are parents too busy ro look out for their children? Is that it? By the way, congrats to your Rangers for the win last night. I didn't see the game but was happy to read bout it this morning. Lundqvist needs to goal against LA like he did against the Habs.

I remember Charles Manson developing a cult and these were of young adults...willing to kill for Charlie to this very day...let's not forget the Jim Jones cult either...yes not on the web but still managed to dupe many people into not only killing themselves but their families as well...

Re: Re:

and I remember complaints that cartoons were so violent that children should not be watching them, but the Coyote may have spent half his life being blown up by a bomb or falling off a cliff but he was back the next second ...cartoons did not die.

Re: jimmy

You may be right, jean. Perhaps that website was just the 'final straw' in motivating these girls to perpetrate such a heinous crime. The article said that they had been planning this attack "for months." And if that's what they chose to do to their friend, just imagine what they might have done to someone they really disliked! It's getting scary out there . . .

Re: Jimmy

And that's why I concluded that piece, Naut, with that sardonic statement "Welcome to 21st century America!" Back in my day ( and I assume in yours as well ) a friend who fell out of favor became 'excommunicated' from the pack with some 'cold shoulders' and a few nasty notes anonymously written on the cover of their notebooks! Before you know it, 6th graders will now be trying to hire 'hit men.'  What the heck is going on out there . . . ?

Re: JimmyA

Yeah, I'm sure it is, Sir Wiley. We discover fire, and learn that it can cook our food and keep us warm. We also learn that it can burn us and cause serious damage and harm. So, we understand the dangers along with the benefits. That was thousands of years ago. Now we have computers and the Internet, and people still don't understand the dangers that come along with the benefits! I think it may be time to head back to the caves . . .

Re:

In many of these cases, Kabu, the final fault usually does circle around to the parents, and deservedly so. When I was a kid, my brothers and sisters and I grew up watching cartoons like Popeye, which almost always ended with Popeye beating the crap out of Bluto. And yet, none of my siblings ( or friends for that matter ) ever felt compelled to emulate those actions, for one simple reason: our parents would never have permitted it! So why are kids so easily influenced today? Where were the parents? Yes, so many questions that will probably never be accurately answered. But keep an eye and ear out, because I'm sure this won't be the last time we hear of such a bizarre and preventable tragedy . . .

Re:

In my best estimates, Bill . . . never! That's why I remain a Free-Thinking Non-Conformist! I don't care about monikers, and I am not 'easily swayed' by anyone or anything. Too bad the bulk of the population can't feel the same . . .

Re:

That it is, mneme, that it is. And you're right. I don't suppose America has a monopoly on idiocy or of people ( young or old ) who are easily fooled or influenced by bizarre and less-than-reputable cretins! What a shame . . .

Re:

It is indeed, FSI. And like a burning plane spinning horribly out of control as it plummets to the ground, so I see the human race as a whole! Where the hell did we go wrong . . . ?

my feeling are that a 12 year old knows that murder is against the law even if someone tells you to do it.  and why did they pick a "friend" to murder?  goes a little deeper than just something they read on the net i think.

Jimmy

I was shocked when I read that a short while ago, and I'm not easily shocked...Right about the same time there was another case, I believe, where a couple of girls killed another one because they didn't want her as a friend any longer; you no longer like your friends, just bump 'em off, I guess...

It really is a foreign World to me James. I am glad to be buried quietly here with Sir Wiley and That Cat. How do little girls get hold of such knives, were they truly influenced by this Character? So many questions and no one will want to take responsibility, especially the parents who didn't supervise the lives properly of their children.

I suspect it isn't just America Jimmy - could happen anywhere if the circumstances allowed it. What a sad story.
