I despise automatic debits and find I encounter the same problem.

i used to say i would never have a debit card, i have had one for a year now and love it. thought i would never be able to keep track of what i spent.  jsut to make sure i had my savings tied into cking so that if i slipped up there would be no fees.  now i pay all my bills on line, because i can pay early or on the day they are due if i pay in the morning.  i can manage a very limited income this way.  there are always dangers in life, i just try and do things as safely as possible like remembering to log out and not reading email unless it is from family.  it is good to keep up with the times so in case there is a big change we are not left in the dark.

I prefer the written check because I use duplicates and i keep the duplicate for my taxes since they don't return the cancelled checks anymore unless i pay an additional fee

I pay on line attimes but actually with all the scams around I am nervous of doing money on line at the moment.

I use online bill pay. However, except for cable, which has a fixed amount, I do not have them automatically. I go online and pay them as they come.

Yeah, paying bills, in any form, is a drag everyone must deal with! However, my wife and I also don't abide by those 'automatic payment' systems either. I don't mind writing a check and paying for stamps, and it does seem to give us better control over our finances. We don't like 'surprises' either . . .

It does keep a person on their toes, trying to keep finances in order, doesn't it.  I do a pretty good job, but I know lots of people who have trouble with it.  My older sister has turned her financial business over to her daughter to take care of.  I did it for my parents in their last years.  I guess one day one of my sons will have to be POA for me.  Oh well, nothing in this life is perfect.  Disappointed smile

I suppose if anyone has plenty of money  it doesn't matter much about ordinary expenses, one has to just adjust for the big ones. Good luck with the new system.
