Hitler obviously under-estimated the resolve of the English, who knew perfectly well that, if they didn't remain steadfast, their island was surely doomed! It's a lesson many countries should learn . . .

Utah, yes it was a quote from Churchill who was decrying a defeatist attitude about the possibility of being attacked by Hitler. But why we're so many predictions wrong?

who are by no means as placid or dull-witted as a cow. Patriotism runs deep in the English heart, and so also does experience of surviving terrible times.

I am not sure why. Even though I have a B.A. in history, I am not too familiar with the nooks and crannies of World War II history.
