Re:

I would think so too, Against. It seems somewhat similar to those stock investment crooks, who take people's money knowing full well they have no intentions of not only investing it in anything, but they also have no intentions of paying it back either! Granted it may have been on a smaller scale, but the unscrupulous principle is probably the same . . .

Re:

Well, lovelylady, the fact that this restaurant would 'suddenly' close it's doors was one thing. It was a nice, little eatery that we were just starting to enjoy going to. But to sell someone a gift certificate knowing the place would be closing soon was just plain mean, if that's indeed what happened. There's still a slim chance that deli owner could have been wrong, and the restaurant is only temporarily closed. We'll see . . .

Re:

We are too, Amanda. We would love to get to the bottom of this, one way or another. However, sometimes we can't help but wonder if this was done to anyone else! I certainly hope not . . .

I would say that that is criminal what the restaurant did.

Sadly Jimmy, this same thing happened to Margaret and I about two years ago.  There was a nice small retaurant here in town that make great food.  One winter evening, we rang to order, and no problem.

But then, about a week or so later when we rang .to place another order, they were gone!

No warning, nothing!

I just hate it when that happens.  I don't blame you for being pissed off.

Wow, that is weird! I am sorry that happened.

Re:

Well, Kabu, it was worth a shot. And you can understand my confusion, because I think the Keith Richards from the Rolling Stones may have born a century ago as well! I mean, sometimes he certainly looks it . . .

Re: Very Strange

Let me put it this way, Jeff. Not only would I love to know the full explanation as well, but I will be more than happy to pass it on, which may perhaps serve as a warning to others. As always, it's 'buyer beware,' although there was no way we could possibly know this would happen . . .

Re:

Thanks, TAPS. I guess, if it appears that that money is indeed 'lost to the wind,' we should be thankful it wasn't a huge sum of money! I know of many people in similar but far worse situations who have lost thousands! Although we may never know what actually happened, we just have to 'cut our losses' and move on . . .

Re: JimmyA

I really hope it doesn't came to that, Sir Wiley, but it just might. I know New Jersey has some kind of reputation of being 'connected' sometimes, but something tells me that The Don may have very little interest in this tiny restaurant. Obviously not much of a money-maker! We shall see . . .

Re:

You know I mean this with the uttmost respect, Kabu, but I certainly hope you're wrong! My wife and I have no intention of being involved in some kind of 'lawsuit,' especially over just $25. Ya know, there's a slight chance that that deli owner was mistaken, and the restaurant is only temporarily closed ( although a sign on the door would be nice ). Yeah, I know . . . wishful thinking!

Re:

So I guess, FSI, this was not an 'isolated incident.' It's a shame that some business owners think nothing of doing something like this. Not only do I hope we can recoup that money, but I also hope that he didn't do this to a lot of other people as well . . .

Re:

We still did, Carolyn, but it was upsetting nonetheless to discover this. Like I wrote, it would have been one thing if the restaurant was 'temporarily' closed. But to 'take the money and run' like that? Terrible . . .

Re: Jimmy

I'm not quite sure how that might actually work, Naut, but I'll have to look closer at that certificate. However, something gives me the feeling that it could end up being a wild goose chase! I'm just thankful that it wasn't for a huge sum of money! Then I might actually have to get the authorities involved . . .

Re: Jimmy..this really does sound fishy and unscrupulous...

This is one 'disease,' Rumor, our society definitely does not need! I know sometimes people have a 'dog eat dog' mentality, and things are tough out there! But this is ridiculous . . . !!

I have heard of such things happening and that you cannot get the money back.  I wish you luck.

You really are a marvelous writer. Galaleo's opened because the 'Don' told the owner to open it so something very big financially would happen in that restaurant. Maybe you should talk with the police somewhere and you'll maybe have an answer?

re your question in my post. LOL....NO not Keith Richards from the Rolling Stone.....Oh but what a character he is and Johnny Deppe made him even more famous by building so much of his character for The Pirates of the Caribbean on Richards....but No, this old guy who was born I suppose about a century ago now, was just an old farmer but we who were kids back then still remember how he never finished his poem.

Very Strange

I hope there turns out to be a reasonable explanation, although it's hard to imagine what that could be

posted by jollyjeff on February 28, 2014 at 4:11 PM | link to this | reply

very fishy...I wonder if he sold a thousand of these gift certificates and then just left town with the money. I mean that would be $25000.00 and would probably cover the cost of opening the restuarant...got his money back and left.

That is terrible what that owner did. Like you said, he had to know that he was going to close the restaurant. A decision like that does not just happen...We had a restaurant in the town Locations A and B are do the same thing. I remember a lot of our customers telling us how pissed and they were -and for good reason- when that happened.

unfortunate. some things in life we end up "eating." hope you recoup. glad you had a nice valentine's dinner.

Jimmy

That guy is just a crook! One thing: If he had those gift cards produced somewhere, rather than making them up himself, you might be able to contact those people and find out where you could get hold of him...

Jimmy..this really does sound fishy and unscrupulous...

and there seems to be more and more of this thing going on (it seems almost to be contagious)...
