I think first, human beings love to gossip--love to be first with the news.

Second, we love to see other people in trouble we are not ourselves in--makes us feel superior, especially if the world is saying that those celebs are more significant than we are, ourselves.

Frankly, like most here, I could not care less about any of those you mention... many times, I don't even know the name in the news, and that seems good to me.

I try not to even know their names, and I do not want to know about their lives, I just want to be entertained without the defect of bias.

Believe it or not, about a year ago I wrote an entire blog devoted to the exact same subject, and I will paraphrase here what I wrote then about each and every time I hear or read about these people: DON'T CARE, DON'T CARE, DON'T CARE!!!!!

I want to enjoy a great Movie well acted with a gripping story and well produced and directed. i don't give a flying...banana about their private lives... i read such poetry and stories and drama here from my friends lives I agree who needs to worry about a hair cut or a stint in rehab...and Thank yo dear for caring...I am fine. I hit my head and my shin and probably hurt my pride more than anything. But you are really sweet to care.

I think it is because the media keeps them in the face all the time and drama is interesting to dramatic people. I turn off the TV and do not listen or read about some of those people and especially personal things about them.

Mia

The whole 'celebrity scene' bores me! Most 'celebrities' are media creations, the procucts of a vast and profitable industry; and people fill their empty minds either by gloating over their 'scandals' or by living lives of phantasy by 'knowing' them and vicariously participating in their 'glamour' and 'fame'...

I can't say that it fascinates me at all. I hardly ever watch movies, nor do I read or listen to the star gossip in the media. I probably wouldn't know who they were talking about anyway. If it's a sports celebrity I'd be willing to pay attention. For example, I know the ex-Ranger hockey coach has a shelter and rescues Pitbulls, financing it himself, which makes him an A-1 person in my book. I really don't give a darn if he cuts his hair or not.

Why ask "Why?"?  It just is so.  "Other than an inquiry for a scientific explanation....this way lies madness, to say nothing of an infinite regress." ~Wesley C. Salmon 1978, University of Arizona

I think that there are a variety of reasons why people are obsessed with celebrities. I think it ranges from liking them to wanting to see trainwrecks to not being interested about bigger picture things going on.
