Kabu

This is the third time I've attempted to comment on this beautiful and touching post. Problem is, I want all my books in that trunk. Thinking that only a few would be saved makes my heart hurt.

Sorry, but they all have to come. I'll buy a bigger trunk.

When my grandfather died a few years ago one fo the things I was given was his last Bible. In the front cover he had written his name and his wife's name who had given him the book. He had also added his favorite verses and songs. I treasure this book and am really glad he wrote in the pages. I miss the man who called me sack of taters...

I would not have a list.  I like for others to find what they like.  I understand your view.

I really enjoyed reading this but of course you are a sentimental lady. I think I would have a bonfire and roast some potatoes . You are making me feel sad.

All good choices, a treasure to find.

Oh my dear friend... how I understand your tears as you "saved" that treassure box filled with your friends... because that is what books are to me as well... friends that I could always count on.  When my husband began getting sick he decided one day my books were just occupying space ... so arriving home that day I found they were all gone.  He had thrown out over 500 of them, that I had collected and like you moved with me from place to place for over 40 years... since I was a little girl practically... They were gone and with them all the memories they held and the dreams I had to give them, as you have, to my children some day.  It was as if I had lost someone I loved and took me a long time to get over it... You have done a great thing... Good for you :-)  xoxoxo

Kabu...

I know we have at least one box full of books..maybe two..in the attic..I'm going by memory because it is much too hot in there today to actually look:

A couple of older Bibles and family history filled in, at least partially; textbooks from school, a lot of Shakespeare included & study notes; at least one poetry book; a handfull of stories written as a teenager for English assignments; school yearbooks

I wish I had had the chance to keep some of my Mom's books, but have no idea where they went after she passed on 9probably snatched up by my two sisters....

That was such a joy reading about the books of th past and the personal books and thinking of all the childhood hours spent in the joy of fantasy. I loved it.

Interesting question. I would need a very deep hole also. It would be difficult to decide which books to include. Your list is a good one.

An interesting and obviously very personal collection! I feel a bit like Utah - how deep the hole, how big the trunk? Maybe a shipping container? LOL...

I would start with Tolkin, J.R.R. and I would never stop until I got to China. So many books, so little earth to hide them in.

A very interesting concept indeed, and there seems to be three ways to deal with this particular dilemma . . . do you fill the trunk with your personal favorites; do you fill the trunk with things you feel future generations should read; or do you fill the trunk with a combination of both, along with an explanation for your choices? Even if I were to choose the third method, it would take some serious thinking to decide on those books. I guess I'll just have to get back to ya . . .
