There seem to be a lot of angry and aggravated people around.  And, this is a subject that is well covered by comments from angry people if one wanders the Internet and ends up at places such as The Huffington Post, et al.

Ciel

I read this before but didn't comment since I dcided that maybe I should think a little more about it, and I did, with roughly the same results.

Let me say that, as far as I am concerned, people can marry their blow-up dolls or their dildoes, for all I care. All of that is 'epiphenomenal', as it were, and all of these debates are really pointless and rather boring, actually. The 'family institution' is simply broken, and it's ironic that people whose demand to be married might have seen them committed to an asylum a hundred years ago do so at a time when the whole institution is in ruins, at least in the civilized world. The 'social forces' operating here (this is just a comment, not a book, LOL) are complex, and have also led to the fact that the civilized world is literally dying out. Not one of the Western countries are even close to maintaining their populations, and where they appear to be, it ain't really the case, but I ain't gonna go there...

Ceil sadly I am like the majority I suspect and have no high opinion on many aspects of life. I find it enough of a problem to to cope with the indiscriminate actions of others and of myself. As long as there is no harm to others, is my criterion, even if I do not approve.

i'm only going address the separation of church and state....i agree...it's none of their business...gov't needs to worry about things that actually pertain to governing not regulating with whom I am in relationship or marital union!

ciel,

addressing the technology first, i am not so sure it makes the world a better place, or easier, in fact in some cases it may be the road to hell, but we will keep progressing so we might as well try in some small way to keep up with it.

my husband asked me, if two people of the same sex get married is it a civil union? i replied i thought that if you got married in a church it was a religious union and if you got married at town hall by a justice of the peace or just someone that was licensed to be able to perform the marriage ceremony then it was a civil union. and that it didnt matter if it was 1 man and 1 woman or 2 of the same.

in my book if it is a loving relationship why does it matter.  we are bound by one commandment and that is to love others.

When it comes to so-called "modern technology," I totally agree! I simply cannot keep up any longer! Each time someone comes up with the "new & improved" version of something, they quickly change it again! I like to keep things simple ( what I can control ) and I refuse to purchase anything that I may not necessarily need.

As for the first part of your diatribe, I'm gonna go for broke and simply give my opinion . . .

I believe that everyone, regardless of their age, race, gender, nationality, financial situation, political affiliations, religious beliefs, etc., needs someone in their lives . . . a partner, a confidant, a helpmate, a supporter, whatever . . . to share all of the ups and downs of life. However, even with that being said, I'm sticking to my guns and saying that marriage should be solely between a man and a woman, period, end of story. If you wish to use the term Civil Union for gay people, fine. I can accept that. But I will never, ever look upon these people as being "married!" Again, that's just my opinion . . .
