A wonderful story and a look at how America was really built, he was a man who cared for people.

It is always a dog eat dog world and even more so elsewhere. It will always be so, and although this man had great forsight, all employees are paid from what would have been profit both then and now that we call (Overhead). He started the idea of employee owned businesses, like "Hot Dog on a Stick" Winnco Foods and thousands of others. I have been to that area and it is beautiful, but only because of the way our Representative Republic was set up to work with a Constitution that can be changed to fit the age. A beautiful post today, and I will miss the wonderful way you write while I am away.

Obviously, you would want to work harder and more efficiently for a boss who actually cares about your well-being and pay! Sounds like Mr. Nelson left a nice legacy for himself, and I'm glad that area is treated as a historical landmark.

Around that time the idea of establishing 'company towns' was very much in the air - we have some here in Canada as well. It's a good example of 'enlightened self-interest'...

Well Pat an old chap once told me he overheard coversation at a meeting of factory owners and the consensous was that eight times the wages as profit should be achieved for every worker. Another told me he worked a full week   6am-8pm he was just coming out of the factory Sunday evening and the owner walked up to him and said I have seen your pay packet, but don't think you are going to buy houses out of me. Funny enough the worker was an uncle of Archie and had six children. He never bought a house.
