Haha - Archie likes to hear homself talk, I'm thinking.  Another great poem that shows the picture of how it was then. I can't remember rationing, but do recall stories about it told by the grannies and grandpas....usually when they were trying to convince one to eat whatever was on the supper plate.

Re: I'm not familiar with the term "Beatrice stove."

Pat Beatrice stoves were used quite a lot by the country folk. They had a square cast iron base either one or two wicks about 5 inches wide. Very basic really, to nearly square tin chimneys which were easily replaceable, but not very pleasant if an old lady brought one out to be repaired in a snowstorm. Quite a lot of folk used a Primus well paraffin was only one one and four pence halfpenny a gallon delivered and didn't they holler when it went up a penny.

Re: FS

Trees are lovely in the right situation, but you do not want them to near to your house foundation. Yes one had to cut the cheese pretty thin in those days.

Re: Kabu

Yes, Kabu, the Commonwealth was strong in those days, but of course it Being dragged into wars. Archie is a necessary evil, actually he would do anything for me only he grouses all the time, which is a trait in his family.

I could use Archie to take care of a few trees in my yard...It's interesting to read of the rationing during the War.

I'm not familiar with the term "Beatrice stove."

but the rest of the wartime bits seem familiar. Our rationing in the states was not as severe as yours, but I do remember shortages of such luxuries as toilet paper, and how we recycled the Sears Roebuck catalogs.  Beautiful flower photo... :)
