Re: Way to go Ichiro! I've been a fan ever since he came to the Mariners
Pat, Ichiro is so cool. He's batting ninth for the Yankees, working his way up to cleanup. Lol

HAHA. Great post. I definitely got it all. I grew up with a dad and a brother who were baseball fans in the good old days way back when Kansas City had the KC A's and Zena played the organ like mad every time something good happened. What spirit we all had. And when we couldn't go to the stadium over on Brooklyn Avenue, it was almost as good listening to it on the radio. It was like knowing baseball language.

Way to go Ichiro! I've been a fan ever since he came to the Mariners
years ago. As for the reading strategies vs vocab -- when I was in grade school we used workbooks titled "We learn by doing." There were the Dick and Jane things, too. (Yes, I'm older than dirt.) We read assignments, we read aloud in class, we learned through repetition, by talking about what we read, and by teacher's explanation. This was before the 'new math' or the idea of reading strategies.
I think there's a lot to be said for an individual's curiosity, following an information thread, getting the satisfaction of discovery. My teachers were pretty good about planting ideas for us to follow up. Don't know if that's a strategy, or just smart teaching.

I agree with lionreign. Having a large vocubulary helps to open up the mind to more diverse concepts. It seems this would enable learning more than focus on strategies.

As a kid I had a huge vocabulary (gained by reading) and so was able to get on well with literature and learn easily from it. I don't think I ever felt the need to be told how to understand things, it was something I built up along the way. To be the vocabulary seems more important.

well you didn't clarify ... so we assume that the excellent readers were those who were learning by metacognitive.....
vocabulary is everything...otherwise you might be speaking like the bowery boys and that's quite a misconbobulation!

I agree vocabulary is so important, how does one comprehend unless they understand verbally?
