I suppose everyone sees things differently and if not first-hand it has been gleaned from others and collated in half truths to eventually form a nucleus.

Welcome to the discipline of History, a never-ending quest! But I will tell you that it is possible to achieve a very high level of objectivity, though it does take training and practice. A familiarity with certain areas of philosophy helps as well - maybe I should suggest Popper and Husserl to begin with...

The topic you're raising here is one that has concerned historians throughout the ages, and, as so often, is one that tempts me to respond in detail. But I shall resist the temptation, LOL, since it would end up being another series, which is something I am not ready for at the moment and which, moreover, would probably cost me most of the few readers I have...
