You might want to try an extra fat rubber band (like the type that sometimes hold produce together). They are smaller than the jar grippers and, to me, easier to manipulate.

I always have trouble pulling a large needle through plastic canvas when I am sewing together a project. I tried needle nose pliers, but what works for me are those pieces of rubber that you can get for opening jars. It grips the needle great and gives me just enough "umph" to pull it through.

I need a tool. My nails are broken from gardening and I have this
little piece of steel to pull through a very small hole on a job that I am starting. I will have to go to Home Depot Sigh. I never know where to look when I am amongst the tools Still I have to do this for I need a special pair of Needle Nosed Pliers!!!!
