Re: 2902

thank you!  I am delighted that you picked up on that, I worked fairly hard to keep the last stanza to using short prosaic words after the longer, airier words in the preceding one to attempt to emphasise the practical, no nonsense viewpoint

Re: sam444

Part of me agrees with you, that part of me that achieves and organises and takes care of hearth and home, but there is also a part of me that longs to be free of it all, to down tools and go on an adventure.  I shall never do it, of course, but some days I dream.  I shall hope to see you in October my friend, good luck!

Re: WileyJohn

Thank you my friend, I think one has to accept it in the end because it IS my choice to work - I value the options and security that come with a steady income more than I value the freedom of unemployment

Re: TAPS

I think I have an inner Pan and in some ways he is entirely right - I should make sure I experience life every single day but I must also resign myself to the reality of having to pay for the things I want

On a second and third reading

I like this poem even more because of the freshness and originality of the last two lines - emphatic accent of one-syllable words used unexpectedly.  They sound exactly as if you're deciding to clear your head,  pull up your bootstraps and get on with it - a great fit of sound to sense.

Hey Lion!

I've always felt that nothing should get in the way of a paycheck because it's the best way to keep life moving along to reach that old and gray stage when on can sit back and enjoy the vista so to speak! Nice work and I agree with Wiley, acceptance indeed! Well, I am off Blogit for some time! There are many things I have to get done and the big one right now is my mortgage! I so desire to own a home again! I will be taking the next two months to make sure everything is in order so nothing unexpected comes my way! There is a chance I could be back in October! Till then, take care and keep writing your exquisite poetry! sam

Until the last verse, you sounded like Peter Pan.  But then, you straightened up and made the right choice, I think.

Very human and well-expressed!

They still tell the story of the ferryboat captain in New York harbor who kicked the traces and, instead of taking his ealy-morning commuters from Staten Island to the Battery, sailed upriver as far as the George Washington Bridge where he was finally stopped by a police boat or the Coast Guard.  His passengers at first were irate for being kept from going to work, but, at the end, cheered as he was led off and the boat brought back to the ferry slip.   By the time I heard the story, I'm sure it had been embellished some, but I always loved it.
