My daughter, who lives here in Illinois, needed my support after her husband died suddenly. So I retired, sold the house and came.

I have similar memories from our own highly diverse campuses, and fascinating they were. But I found that differences in appearance did not always go hand-in-hand with differences in thinking - there were 'fashions of thought' that you flouted at your peril. Once, in a graduate seminar, I remember the reaction by a prof who had just returned from China, and who was outraged that I dared ridicule Mao's Little Red Book...
