Travelling to the places where one's ancestors lived their lives can be an experience that somehow touches the soul. There is a sense of rootedness, and one also wonders to what extent their lives helped shape your own, even if you never knew them...Oh, and I 'flew' to Waterville on Google Earth - looks like a nice place...

It is neat what all of these reconnections can lead to.

I hope you get a small place to take root as it were! I loved reading about your experience! There is something magical about small towns and the folks who live/d in them! And when it is someone dear it makes for something truly special! sam

How interesting to go find your roots like this and feel a sort of

peace about knowing that you do have roots. A nice little house in a quiet corner of the State might be just what you need for a time. I always plant a tree, just to leave something of myself behind.

Re: BrightIrish

They seem to be bringing more peace as time goes by.  Thank you.

Pat,

I love him!  That is quite a compliment to have anything I have written even come close to something that he does.

I have been thinking for sometime to start a public blog about the non-tourist view of Minnesota.  Most people think all we have here is snow and the Mall Of America.   There is so much more...15,291 lakes...that could keep me busy for awhile.

Re: I managed to avoid the lutfisk

Cpklapper.  I have to admit, I had to look up kroppkakor.  That I think I might be able to handle beside anything served with lingonberry jam HAS to be yummy.

Your visit "home" sounds a bit like the stories by Garrison Kiellor

about Lake Woebegon, Minnesota -- a fictional town. I've been listening to his stories on "A Prairie Home Companion" on PBS for at least 20 years. Sometimes his stories sound like they were written by a fly on the wall when I was growing up. Sounds like this was a useful visit, fact-finding mission....

but not the kroppkakor.
