Re: Kabu - there is no doubt that the legend has a life of its own

Intellectually I know all this but the kid in me just wants to remember the good, yes the fairy tale...No wonder it is almost impossible to get accurate history.

WileyJohn - as I mentioned, it is a complex issue

When we began full funding for the Catholic separate school board we set a precedence. Other religious groups are now beginning to demand the same treatment. My biggest concern is not which groups establish their own educational systems but more using taxpayer money for uneccessary duplication. If immigration patterns and ethnic community birthrates continue on the same tragectory, I agree we will have a huge problem to deal with.

Gomedome

Well my thinking is it won't be long before Muslim schools will be demanded and then they'll want Sharia law and there will be no end to it. I grew up Catholic myself but I don't see why the public system can't be as educational do you?Ciao!!

WileyJohn - the support given to separate schools is a complex issue

I've been a fence sitter and stood on both sides of the fence on this issue over the years. My thinking today is that once a separate school system reaches a certain size and is educating a very large segment of our youth, it is in our best interests to insure that those young people have a standardized education of equal quality to the rest of the population.

Kabu - there is no doubt that the legend has a life of its own

JFK's indiscretions, drug use etc. are completely ignored in favor of remembering some of his great moments as president and the fairy tale setting of his marriage to Jaqueline Bouvier.

sam444 - Palin debating Obama would be hilarious

But also more than a little unfair. Obama is a pretty sharp guy, Palin did not know that the Queen of England did not run the English government and that North and South Korea were two separate countries to name but 2 of her ignorant gaffs. He would crush her.

Amanda__ - it sure has been interesting

We are more and more seeing candidates saying different things to their party faithful to gain the nomination than they would say to the general electorate.

Gomedome

A great post and we shouldn't have government sponsored Catholic schools in Ontario either. Santorum is a fruitcake and really can't think for himself, he'll be all twisted out of shape by that 'Humanae Vitae' dictum that really screwed up a lot of we Catholics.

Re: Kabu - Re: as a girl in Australia during the Kennedy years, . . .

I know that Gome and I know the scandals and stuff, yet......I guess I just want to hold onto the best of the Kennedy legend.

I don't believe in family curses but yet, the sins of the father do appear to have settled on the generations of Kennedys that followed him.

The whole thing with this run for the nomination is nothing but a bad reality show! And now Palin, who can't seem to stay out of things would like to debate Obama! The second series begins! LOL! sam

This primary election season has been quite interesting.

Katray2 - Re: Wow indeed, Gomedome . . .

What astonishes me the most outside of the fact that he actually does have as much support as he does, is how a person running for public office can be so ignorant of the history surrounding this speech.

Wow indeed, Gomedome! I interpret his weird twisting of Kennedy's

words to mean the mere thought of separation between church and state makes Santorum sick...creeepy...

The races have been LOL entertaining; especially when Rick Perry, Herman Cain, Michelle Bachmann were in them, but Santorum and his supporters have silenced the laughter. Those of us who value freedom and our constitution are shakin' in our boots., That said, if by some nightmare scenario he wins, enough of our citizenry will not tolerate being forced to live under "faith based" laws.

Re: Xeno-x - Re: Santorum is about the scariest person I know.

that's the scariest part for me too -- how many supporters he has -- very scary

"be afraid -- be VERY afraid!!"

Xeno-x - Re: Santorum is about the scariest person I know.

I am having trouble believing how backwards his views are, he is the Christian equivalent of the Taliban but the scariest part is that he is not a fringe candidate. He may not win but he is receiving a substantial amount of support which to me is the scariest part. Are there really that many people in this day and age buying into his utter BS?

ash_pradhan - Re: Welcome back GD...

Thank you for the welcome back. I did not catch the claim about gas prices but isn't it typical of any election where candidates will say just about anything they think that people want to hear no matter how absurd.

TAPS. - thank you for verifying the history

I was 6 years old when JFK was elected and do not remember much of that time period other than his assasination and the duck and cover drills the nuns had us perform during the cuban missile crisis. When the nukes started exploding we were supposed to duck under our school desks, fold our hands and begin muttering gibberish (praying) . . I wish I were kidding.

Kabu - Re: as a girl in Australia during the Kennedy years, . . .

The Kennedy family saga is rather remarkable when we view it years later and with knowledge we did not have at the time. JFK's success as a politician for example was entirely orchestrated by his gangster father.

Santorum is about the scariest person I know.

A man who might (very long shot --- probably about 14% chance at best) be President of the United States and who would press his religious agenda on the rest of us.

His point of view is so skewed -- like the incident you related here -- he takes a quote from a candidate who wanted to assure people that religion would have no place in governance of our country -- a man who understood that -- then he turns it into a thing threatening freedom of religion.

We have been over this so many times.

And this man is the epitome of a dangerous viewpoint.

Welcome back GD...

did you catch the quip / preposterous claim by yet another of our Presidential hopefuls, "When I'm elected, I'll lower the gas price to $2.50 a gallon" !!

posted by ash_pradhan on March 13, 2012 at 7:08 PM | link to this | reply

The year JFK was elected was the first election in which I was old enough to vote for a president.  It was quite exciting, and meaningful, and entertaining all at the same time.  I remember the talk of the timorous non-catholics who feared that the pope would manage to take over our country.

very conservative and mainly protestant country that  were,  yes, every one of us were totally fascinated and in love with this man. his speeches, his courage, his war service his ability to stand up to the bogie of Communism.....
